Kinky Naps

I´m certain by now the whole world has been smacked in the face by black women keeping their natural hair as opposed to taming it with relaxers. It has become quite a movement and I´m trying my bestest to not call it a fad because in my opinion, it´s such hard dedicated work and I do not think anyone who decides to return natural will go through all that jazz just for fad….my opinion…I could be wrong…but I dont think so. Lol

Now there´s all these hair care methods, acronyms and all other head spinninig things that is basically attached to having nappy hair(some people may object to the use of the word nappy….I don´t) and it is incredible how much of a diy person you become when you deal with natural hair. Which of course is not a bad thing. Oh no.

The better part of last year was filled with natural hair nazis and some sort of war between them and the girls who choose to stick with the creamy crack as they like to call it but thankfully this year all that crap has ended…..at least it does look like it has ended as I do not read anything or hear anything about it. Hmmm, could be that I do not bother with stories that talk about nappy haters and straight hair lovers and the whole nine yards that comes with the beef between both worlds.

Then the segregation between hair typing, length, thickness, whatever you can think of just totally drives me nuts. Then of course the women with really long hair who tell you they don´t care about lenght. Lmao. This one just cracks me up. Of course you don´t care about lenght…you have it duh!!!!

Now my reason for going back to my kinky hair had nothing to do with rediscovering myself or wanting a new look or blaming my hair woes on the creamy crack.

It was just a quick decision I came to in Christmas of 2009. I was in Köln for the summer and then had to fly to Texas via Amsterdam and I had my bff braid a quick style for me and when I got to Amsterdam, I hated my look. It seemed like she was rushing to deal with my hair(which in all truthfulness she was cos her toddler was disturbing at the time of making the hair) So before boarding my flight, I took the whole braids out and just ran my fingers through my hair. Long story short, I just blamed my ugly hair on the weather in Germany( silly reasoning but hey….)

In November of that year I had my sister cut off all my hair and decided there and then to keep my hair natural for five years before putting in relaxers.

Now all that time, I had no idea there was such a thing as natural hair movement so I was not on YouTube or Google searching for care methods. No. I just did what I knew which was nothing. I would wash my hair and use a dryer on it( if you are natural you will know that was my biggest mistake cos natural hair thrives with moisture) I was basically doing all the things I wasn´t supposed to do to my hair and then some. It was a disaster and I was totally clueless about caring for my hair.

Anyways, I found out about the whole nappy movement last year. got great tips from Yellowsisi and started taking care of my hair and it has been a great ride so far. It will be five years in November I did my big chop and one year since my care routine began and I have seen a huge difference and I´m totally proud of myself.

Have I had adventures with my hair? Oh Gawd yes. From my mother telling me I will never find a husband with my hair like that, to the potential boyfriend who basically gave me an ultimatum…ist me or your hair(duh, I chose my hair. that is a no brainer) to the stranger sitting next to me on a plane telling me I would never get a job with my hair like that to the friend of a friend who made it clear that caucasian men would never date a black girl with nappy hair.

Has it always been this bad? No not at all. The people who matter to me love it…well except mom…my sister, my childhood friend and a few friends I made from them University days. Gorgeousness is crazy about it and doesn´t really like my PS days.(remember those acronyms I talked about? PS is protective style).

I joined a few hair groups on Facebook for tips and ofcourse help out new nappers as I like to call them. I haven´t been to a Salon in 7 months as I have learned how to deal with my hair. Now am I a product Junkie? Not at all. These products can be stupidly expensive so there is no way I´m going to junk out on them. However, I do have regular products I keep for my routine.

The black liquid in the BBQ squirt bottle is my black soap shampoo. I basically cut the soap into bits and tossed into the bottle, added water and a spoonful of coconut oil. A tip I got from a hair page on Facebook Natural Hair babes

Next to is my leave in conditioner which I only use on wash day(yeah, those terms I talked about!!) then regular conditioner I get from Rossman and ACV(more acronyms!!!)

Then I have Aloe Vera Juice which I like to mix with water as my leave in spray, and a few oils.

Sorry about this but photography is rocket science for me. But those are just my spray bottles. I like to reuse bottles a lot. The hair gel I got and instantly hated it so tossed the content out, washed and in goes my water. The nozzle is so amazing and sprays just the way I like. The cutie beside it is my leave in mix which has 90% water, Aloe Vera saft und Glycerin.

And that´s all I use for my hair…oh except when doing a dc(more acronyms). I use honey and mayo. I´m pretty much simple with my hair care and that works just fine. No way will you see me adding eggs or Avocado or whatever. I just eat all that instead!!!

Now for the next one vielliecht 3 years, i will be doing a lot of protective styles to help me keep my hands out of my hair. as I intend to remain with my kinks for as long as I can.

I have nothing against relaxers or human hair extensions….nothing at all. I believe that how a woman chooses to deal with her hair is nobody´s business but hers.
